PNGGauntlet is a simple Windows app that compresses PNG files, decreasing their size to increase webpage performance. It works by running the image through three lossless compression algorithms – PNGOUT, OptiPNG, and DeflOpt. This produces the smallest possible PNG images, without any negative impact to picture quality.

In addition to PNG compression, the app is able to convert JPG, GIF, TIFF, and BMP files to the PNG format. The app requires the Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 (or newer) to be installed. While PNGGauntlet only supports Windows, the developer recommends ImageOptim andTrimage for Mac OS X and Linux users, respectively.
